REVIEW: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Rated PG-13 • Score: 9.5/10

Let’s cut to the chase: This is by far my favorite of the Marvel Cinematic Universe origin stories—and that’s saying something—and one of my top five productions in the MCU.It’s also far different from anything Marvel has ever done before, even if it sticks to what’s a generally cut-and-dry formula seen in most superhero movies. The cinematography in this film is incredible, with some of the most artistically beautiful hand-to-hand combat scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. And even with the formulaic approach, the story is deep and moving. The performances in Shang-Chi—and I’ll keep it broad to avoid spoilers—really draw you into the story that’s unfolding, with an antagonist that’s not likable, but certainly understandable and heart-wrenching.Simu Liu as the title character is a perfect casting (watch Kim’s Convenience on Netflix if you haven’t already, to see more of him) and Awkwafina in her role as a supporting character is endearing and relatable. In many ways, she steals the show. It’s also a shame Tony Leung hasn’t been in more Hollywood productions, and that I frankly haven’t spent much time with Chinese cinema, because he is a dynamic presence and I want to see more of his work. This movie is a must-see for any comic book fan, and frankly anyone who appreciates the martial arts, great action, fantasy epics or powerful storytelling. The bottom line: I’m definitely seeing it again. 9.5/10
