REVIEW: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Rated PG • Score: 9/10

This film is as about close to the cat’s meow as I’ve found with animation this year, delivering a climactic, contemplative story using a unique animation style.

The film follows the adventurous feline Puss (a character from the Shrek franchise) as he navigates his ninth and final life, sparring with Death and searching for happiness along the way.

Overall, the voice acting is superb throughout, particularly by Antonio Banderas as the titular tabby hero and Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws. Florence Pugh as Goldilocks was a very pleasant surprise, as well.

The writing in this movie is strong throughout and, characteristic of a cat, the story really lands on its feet. It’ll pull at your heartstrings with interesting storylines and character dynamics, while also delivering a great music and a slew of funny moments (including some well-placed bleep-outs that keep the movie kid-friendly while adding a layer of hilarity for older audience members). The storybook-style animation is stunning and well-executed, even if it’s not necessarily my cup of tea.

The bottom line: It’s a strong entry into the Shrek franchise and will leave most purring with delight. 9/10
